Something fine and rare – something worthy of the honour of being owned by Jim.

要买一件精致而又珍奇的东西,一件配得上吉姆的东西.

[点拨]    Something fine and rare 是对上一句中something nice的进一步阐述.为避免重复,采用了省略结构.Fine and rare 是形容词,作定语,修饰something

              something worthy of the honour of being owned by Jimsomething fine and rarer 的同位语,起进一步说明的作用.这个词组暗含德拉崇拜吉姆,认为他拥有什么东西,对那件东西是一大光荣的意思.

              worthy 是形容词,意思是配得上的值得的=deserving).Worthy 在句中可作表语或定语;作表语时,不能单独使用,后面要先接of再接名词或动名词的被到形式;也可以在worthy的后面直接接动词不定式.例如:

e.g.1     The place is worthy of a visit.

这个地方是值得参观的.

这是一个还算不错的报酬.

       Worthyworth 的区别:worth用作形容词时和worthy差不多,都大致相当于汉语的,在作表语时,都有不可单独使用.但这两个词有用法和搭配上有所不同,极易混淆.

Worth 作形容词时,只能作表语,后面一般接动名词的主动形式来表达被动的意思,或接名词(只用于钱数或相当于代价的比喻性名词).例如:

e.g.1     This book is well worth reading.

这本书很值得读一读.(注意,修饰worthwell,不用very.)

e.g.2     It is worth considering.

这是值得考虑的.

e.g.3     This dictionary is worth ten yuan.

Rare, scarce, uncommon, unusual的区别

     Rare 指不一般的事物,通常指罕见而有价值的事物;scare指有用的一般事物,但目前没能得到足够的数量,不指无用的或珍奇事物,uncommonunusual指不是经常发生、因而值得注 意的事物.

       They are rare birds.

它们是珍禽.

       Potatoes are scarce these days.

近来土豆短缺.

       I’m surprised at her uncommon generosity.

我对她这种不寻常的慷慨行为感到惊奇.

       Such cold weather is quite unusual in spring.

[点拨]    此句将介词置于关系代词前,修饰先行词possessions

e.g.     There was none to whom he could turn for help in the dark street.

She pulled down her hair and let it fall to its full length.

她解开头发让它披散下来.

[点拨]    1pull down 在此处的意思是拉低放下=to lower; draw down).

e.g.1    He pulled his hat down over his eyes so that nobody should recognize him.

他把帽子拉低遮住眼睛,好叫人认不出他来.

e.g.2    The window curtain was pulled down as soon as it grew dark.

天一黑,窗帘就拉下来了.

pull down 还常作拆掉(建筑物)=to tear down [a building])解.

    2To its full length是介词短语,作状语,修饰fallTo 在此处表示程度,意思是达到=as far as

e.g.1    We pulled out the telescope to its full length.

我们把望远镜(的镜头)拉出来到最大的限度.

那水齐到了我们的脖子.

[点拨]    Do one’s hair 的意思是(女子)梳理头发把头发盘起=to arrange one’s hair off the neck or shoulders; to make one’s hair into a bun. Etc..

e.g.2  her hair was done up in a very funny way.

         burden 用作动词,表达使负担的意思时,通常与with连用,即burden sb. With .

     fix on \ upon 的意思是注视凝视= look intendly at; gaze at,fix 后面作宾语的有one’s eyes, one’s gaze, fix one’s eyes(gaze) on \ upon . 此外,在fix 后面作宾语的还有one’s attention , one’s mind 等,即fix one’s attention (mind , etc.) on \ upon 集中注意力(集中精神等)于……= to direct one’s attention , etc. steadily on. 例如:

He fixed his eyes on that portrait . ( = His eyes were fixed on that portrait . )他两眼凝视着那张画像。

Thousands of eyes were fixed on him . 千万双眼睛注视着他。

[点拨] read  在此处的意思是理解解释领会= understand; interpret mentally; learn the significance of ,  常在它后面作宾语的有expression ,thought ,mind ,word ,instruction ,riddle 等。

e.g.   How do you read his words ?你对他的话是怎么理解的?

e.g.   I can never read his thoughts .我永远也不能理解他的想法。

It was not anger ,nor surprise ,nor a look showing that he did not approve ,nor horror nor any of the feelings that she had been prepared for .那表情不是生气,不是惊讶,不是不满,不是厌恶,也不是她原先准备应付的任何一种感情。
